2011 Mercedes Classic One Loft Race Team #1

We are shipping our first team down to CBS on Monday morning. The two blue bars and blue checks are down from our Louis Van Hove/ Flor Vervoort/ Jan Aarden ("De Dolle") family. The blue bar splashes are full siblings ("King Louie" x "Royal Class") to our 707 and 708, that raced well for us in the 2010 Mercedes Classic.

I got a few emails asking about how we prepare birds for shipping, so I'll mention a few things here. We wait until the birds come out of the nest boxes on their own, we don't force them down to the loft floor. As they mature in the nest boxes, each box has a feeder cup and the babies learn to eat by watching their parents. We only feed fatty seeds, peanut mash, & peas in these cups. Little by little they eat more and more until they jump ship looking for water. At that point, we will dunk their heads in the water can and they learn to drink and find the drinker on their own. We vaccinate with SalBac and keep them on the floor for a full week and always try to ship the Monday following. The day before shipping, we spray the birds for bugs, and give them a flagyl pill. The day of shipping we force water the birds, give each one 10 peanuts, a Fabry ideal pill, and off they go. I hope that gives you some ideas.

Babies are starting to hatch out...actually the first couple of babies were born on what looks like the last snow storm of the year. This is the time of year where the lights are extended (even more), the protein content gets increased... among other things... ;)...as we prepare these babies, as best we can, to complete their ultimate goal - become WINNERS.

2011 Breeding Season Has Begun!

We are currently in the process of pairing our birds. We have a total of 19 pairs to breed from this year. We have 4 pairs that are breeding for the one loft races and the rest are test pairs or pairs that are line bred/ in bred for stock purposes. The weather over the last few weeks has been perfect! The birds feel spring coming, pairing up and getting everyone settled came much easier this year.

I will have some pictures and video of the breeding process soon - stay tuned!

Super tough race, 200 miler took 7 hours to complete. Our 1st bird made good enough time for 3rd place Missouri Illinois Combine vs. 371 pigeons! We had 3 birds in the top 10% and bred the 7th place bird for another flyer in our club. The 7th place bird, PROP 747, is a full brother to my 1st place combine winner vs. 671 birds at the 150!

5th place Missouri Illinois Combine vs. 603 pigeons! We had 2 out of 9 shipped in the top 10% and we bred positions 25th and 37th (both top 10%) for other flyers. PROP 726 took the A, B, C, & D pools & won 1st place in the combine last week!

We raced 20 birds this weekend, got all 20 home on the day. We had a drop of 5 placing 37th-41st vs. 442 birds, all 5 are in the Top 10%. We also bred the 26th and 35th placed birds for other flyers in our club.

Birds had a 5 to 10 mph side wind, a bit hazy on the course this morning. They did around 1100YPM which is good for a South Easterly wind of 5 to 10.

The weather was great and they had a soft tailwind today. We took them 5 miles short of the 70 mile point.

Release time was 9:15am and arrival at 10:30am; that is 1525 YPM (52 miles an hour)! -They were already in the loft when I got back, so it was actually a bit quicker.

The season opener is in 2 weeks...next weekend we go 85 and the final 100 mile trainer. The first race is 125 miles.

Mercedes Classic 2010 Team

Shipped my two teams down to the Mercedes Classic races on Tuesday 4/20. I still don't understand how a shipment of birds to Las Vegas from Saint Louis can make it the next day, but a shipment to Oklahoma City takes 2-3. It happens every year so I prepare the birds for up to 3 days in the shipping boxes. I give them 10 peas (soaked in water), 10 whole peanuts, 30 mls water, plus a hydra pill.

I proactively put the cocks in the section with the breeding boxes about 2 months ago. I only allow them half of the box. Each cock claims a breeding box and it becomes its perch.

When it comes around to putting the hens together with the cocks, it makes it a lot easier to settle everyone.

I started settling the pairs on Thursday of last week; I have no trouble makers, with the exception of one hen, the rest will lay by the weekend.

I'm feeding 100% Purina Green pellets (18%), calcium syrup & fertibol in the water, and high calcium grit with extra oyster shell added in.

2010 Breeders Prep

The breeders received their PMV shot two weekends ago, we just finished the paratyphoid shots tonight. We have a total of 20 pairs this year and it took a little under an hour to do all 40 birds.

Next up we treat for canker (Ridzol-S), cocci (Miracle-Life), bac. w/ amox, respiratory (Doxy-t), & finish with a wormer. The lights are on 24/7 and we should be ready to pair up around Valentine's day.

I purchased these 2 hens from Fraidoon Ali (Mazari Loft). Both were good flying hens and they are down from his foundation hen "Golden Lady".

Fraidoon was 1st Champion Loft 2008 old birds in the OCF club from 0-550 miles. He also won 1st average speed A old bird series 2008 in the West Course Combine. If that wasn't enough, he was 1st place loft of the year for consistent performance in earning the most points of all competing lofts from 150-600 miles in the A&B&C old bird series in 2007!

We added some new blood to the breeding loft from Greg McKnight, Fraidoon Ali (Orange County Flyer Club), A full brother to *"Lucky Strike's" mother, Van Hove cock bred by Bill Martin who is a grandson to "Blue Pearl" & "Blue Passion", Van Hove hens down from Bill Martin via Larry Campeau (LDC Lofts), and 2 birds from Hafeez Khan inbred to his "Blue Fox" Tournier pigeons. *03-RAC-270

*There was an earthquake the day of the 300 mile race. There were no day birds and only 2 birds made it home the second day. If there was ever a race that made all the hard work I put into the birds feel meaningless, this was it. But hey, that's pigeon racing; you cannot control what nature throws at you the day of a race. I was excited to get an email from Bill letting us know that 0604-AU09-PROP - "Strikes Twice" had made it home the 3rd or 4th day. I will use him in the breeding loft this year, he is a super.

Update 11/03/09: We are down to 1 bird at the CBS races. I don't foresee a good showing in this race for us this year, back to the drawing board...

Well, we have 2 birds left at the Winners Cup race. They are PROPIGEON.COM 602 (Hofken x Van Hove) and IRSH 139, which I purchased from Irish Syndicate Loft in a kit to race at the Cup and ABC races this year. You can see the pedigree of IRSH 139 HERE. The other Irish Syndicate bird on this team was lost (Inbred SureBet).

The CBS race did an inventory on 8/28, you can see the video updates below in the CBS Posting. I still have my full team including the 2 back up birds.

The Triple Crown Classic started "Boot Camp" this week but we haven't had an inventory update yet. I know we lost PROPIGEON.COM 617 early off the loft, hopefully we still have 4 left before road training starts.
***UPDATE*** - the Triple crown just posted its first inventory (CLICK HERE), around 450 birds still in the loft. My PROPIGEON.COM 617 is on the inventory, so it must have found its way back. I'm happy to start with my 5 bird team, hopefully all 5 will be there come road work.

This will be our first year at this event. Ron called and let me know we lost PROPIGEON.COM #617 early off the loft. I still have 4 supers (as far as I know) down from my very best; two of which are full brother/sister to my top 50 finishers in the VegasClassic.com race in '08.

You'll see a flyer by the name of Alvie Smith Jr. on the inventory list flying birds with PROPIGEON.COM bands. He's a good friend and ran out of bands late and I supplied a few. He tells me that PROPIGEON.COM 634 & 635 are down from breeders he acquired from me.

AUGUST 18TH

“Hello everyone;

the races will commence weather permitting October 1st. Initially we
called for entry monies to be sent in Sept. 1st. But here is how we wish to
extend that date for you to send monies in. We will initiate training September 1st and expect to go
daily down the road. We will post results online along with the live cam when we get
them out a ways. You will also see along with the returns from training, your birds
that are here and being trained. We will then ask you to send funds in to cover those birds
and have those funds here no later than September 20th. Checks are fine and so is c/card
via PayPal which I will initiate from my end. Just alert me that you wish to use the
c/card and I will request funds from you.

If you activate your bird based on the inventory given on September 15th
and your bird is missing by the first race, we will refund the entry money for the bird.
If you hesitate and do not send in your funds by the 20th of September you will not receive a refund for any missing birds.

Remember that I have to sell off any unactivated birds to a 3rd party and need time to do this should someone not activate a team bird...

I have stretched the due date for money to give you enough time, more time, and to see how your birds are coming in from training.

Don’t forget that before the FIRST RACE, to send the money for TOP BREEDER and TOP pick bird which is 100.00 for each category.

It’s getting exciting now as we ramp up to race day beginnings. We will post all those who enter the Top bird and Top breeder fund as well as those who buy entries of birds that have not been activated. Let’s have a great series here and be sure to dial in the
camera for the races soon.

I'm pretty excited about the new blog. I will be documenting my 2009 one loft race experience. It would've been nice to start this back in March, so I could have posted everything leading up to sending the youngsters off to the one loft pigeon races, but that'll have to wait until the following season.

Our breeders are currently going through the moult. The cocks are almost done and the hens are finishing up; mostly moulting down feathers at the moment. In my opinion, its important to give plenty of high protein feed, vitamins, minerals, fresh water daily with calcium supplement, and provide plenty of red, granite, and high calcium pigeon grit. This is the most important time of the year for your future/seasoned breeder stock.

One Loft Racer Tip: Do not neglect your breeders during the off season. A successful moult is the beggining to a profitable one loft race season. Put in the time now and you won't be sorry come October. -Reap what you sow!
